Lavish ornamentation of Baroque architecture and design in the 16th to 18th centuries was an result of the Catholic Counter-Reformation in which the displayed wealth added to the mystique of the church and ruling class.

Extravagant wealth, displayed by French royalty and the aristocracy to symbolize power and grandeur, peaked during the Baroque period after the Renaissance and leading up to the French Revolution of 1789.

This period was characterized by domes and Mansard roofs, interiors of ornate carvings, painted barrel-vaulted ceilings and gilded columns, and formal gardens laid out in geometric patterns that expanded the architecture with fountains, reflecting pools and flower beds.
