Manchester

Manchester sits in the northwest of England within the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester — considered the world’s first industrial city, the place where the Industrial Revolution moved from concept to consequence in the 18th and 19th centuries. The cotton mills, the canal system, the railway terminus that connected it to Liverpool and the sea — these aren’t merely historical footnotes. They are the reason for the density, the architecture, and the particular energy of a city that has always known what it was for.

Today Manchester is equally known for two things that have little to do with industry: music and football. The city that produced Joy Division, The Smiths, Oaisis, and the Madchester scene of the late 1980s; and the city that contains both Manchester City (Etihad Stadium, east Manchester) and Manchester United (Old Trafford, Trafford) — two of the most recognized football clubs in the world, separated by a few miles and a century of rivalry.

I visited Manchester on a day trip from London on August 1, 2018 — arriving by train, spending the day, returning that evening.

The tram system runs throughout much of the city of Manchester. For our day visit, we purchased 1-day anytime travelcards for zones 1 and 2 (located at any station). The cost for adults is £4.30 and £2.10 for children.

Signature Moments

• A football pilgrimage in Manchester — Etihad Stadium to Old Trafford within a few hours, two different football cultures separated by a few miles and a century of rivalry, both worth understanding on their own terms
• The Northern Quarter — Manchester’s creative and cultural district, where Victorian warehouses have been converted into the kind of independent bars, record shops, and studios that reveal how a post-industrial city remakes its identity
