CRADLE OF THE GOLDEN AGE
As Holland’s oldest city, dating back to 1220, Dordrecht is also the city where representatives of the Low Countries met with William of Orange in 1572 to plan a united revolt against Spain, inspiring Dutch independence, and ultimately resulting in the Netherlands that we know today.
The windmills of Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage site, are a bicycle ride through the polders (wetlands) or a Waterbus journey away. With over 25% of the Netherlands below sea level, these 19 mills are picturesque examples from 1740 of how the Dutch have been controlling the waters for over 1000 years.
